At Kelbrook, we aim to foster an interest in learning languages in an engaging and enjoyable way. We want to encourage children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the wider world, building an awareness of and celebrating other cultures. Learning how to communicate in another language, both spoken and written, will lay the foundations for further language studies and potential opportunities for studying or travelling abroad.

Children in Key Stage 2 will begin to learn French during weekly sessions. In line with the National Curriculum (2014), we use Sue Cave’s mixed-age scheme of work which utilises Physical French Phonics resources to teach French in a phonics-focussed way. Children will build their knowledge of French graphemes and phonemes, grammar and language structures using a limited set of vocabulary. We use a range of games, stories, songs and rhymes so that language is learnt in a way which is engaging and memorable.

Aims

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

• understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
• can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
• discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied
